What is Typhoid?
Typhoid and paratyphoid are infections caused by ingesting food or water contaminated with the bacteria Salmonella Typhi or Salmonella Paratyphi. These infections, collectively known as enteric fever, are prevalent in low-income regions where sanitation is poor and clean drinking water is limited. Although most cases occur in Asia, the disease is also a concern in Africa and parts of Central and South America.
In the UK, typhoid vaccination is highly recommended for travellers visiting friends and relatives in high-risk regions such as Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.
Symptoms of Typhoid
Symptoms of typhoid and paratyphoid include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle or joint pain
- Constipation or diarrhoea
- Rash
Complications can include intestinal bleeding and perforation (a hole in the bowel wall). While most people recover with treatment, untreated cases can have high fatality rates.
Typhoid Protection & Prevention
The risk of typhoid infection can be reduced by practising good personal hygiene and following food and water safety guidelines. However, the best way to protect yourself is through typhoid immunisation.
Typhoid Vaccine Options
Vaccination is advised for travellers visiting areas where sanitation and food hygiene are inadequate. There are two types of typhoid vaccines:
-Typhoid Injection Vaccine – A single-dose vaccine providing protection for up to three years.
-Oral Typhoid Vaccine – A course of capsules taken over several days
Who Should Get the Typhoid Vaccine?
Public Health England recommends typhoid immunisation for:
– Travellers at risk of typhoid exposure
– Children aged 12 months to two years (if risk is high)
For children under one year, typhoid vaccination is not advised, and extra hygiene precautions should be taken instead.
Length of Protection
After receiving a single dose of the typhoid injection vaccine, booster immunisation is recommended every three years for those at continued risk.
