Expert Solutions for Persistent Earache
What is an Earache?
Earache is one of those complaints that can catch you off guard, a dull ache one day, a sharp stabbing pain the next. It is a pain felt in or around the ear, and it can hit one ear or both. Children get it more often, but plenty of adults end up rubbing their ear too, usually thanks to a cold, a sinus infection, or even a niggling jaw problem.
There isn’t just one cause. Some of the most common reasons people come to us with earache include:
– Middle ear infections (otitis media)
– Outer ear infections, sometimes called swimmer’s ear
– Sinus congestion or a lingering cold
– A build-up of earwax
– Throat infections or dental issues that radiate up to the ear
Symptoms of an Earache
Catching the signs early makes a real difference to how quickly you feel better. Keep an eye out for:
– Sharp, dull, or throbbing pain in the ear
– A feeling of fullness or pressure inside the ear
– Muffled hearing, or hearing that seems to come and go
– Fluid or pus leaking from the ear
– Pain when chewing or moving the jaw
– A fever, which is common in younger children
Home Remedies for Earache Relief
Before you head out the door, there are a few things worth trying at home:
– Warm compress: a warm, not hot, cloth held against the ear can take the edge off
– Paracetamol or ibuprofen: both work well for easing earache pain, taken as directed
– Keep your fluids up: especially handy if a cold is behind the discomfort
– Prop your head up when resting: this helps fluid drain away from the ear naturally
– Leave cotton buds and other objects out of your ear: poking around inside tends to make things worse, not better
